Bone Densitometry (DEXA)

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique that measures bone mineral density to diagnose conditions such as osteoporosis.  It involves passing a thin x-ray beam through the hip and lower spine regions, with a computer comparing the results to those of a younger person and the expected values for someone of the same age, gender, and ethnicity.

Why have I been referred for a BMD scan?

A bone mineral density scan is used to diagnose osteoporosis or determine your risk for developing the condition. You may have been referred for a BMD scan by your doctor for several reasons

  • if you have a medical condition or on medication that could weaken your bones
  • If you are losing height.
  • The presence of a crush fracture on x-ray imaging
  • Suffered from a fracture due a small  injury or fall.

How should I prepare for a BMD scan?

You do not need to make any special preparations for a BMD scan. However, you should avoid wearing clothing with metal buttons or zippers, as these can interfere with the scan.

What will happen during my BMD scan appointment?

During the scan, you will lie on a table while a machine takes X-ray images of your bones, usually in your hip, spine, or forearm. The scan is painless and non-invasive, and typically takes 10-15 minutes to complete.
